There can be an overlap between neurodivergence and sleep. Sleep difficulties are extremely common in neurodivergent people, and they tend to be more complex and more resistant to standard interventions than the sleep challenges most people face. The reasons are neurophysiological, not behavioral, and understanding them from that perspective changes what the approach should look like.
Why do neurodivergent brains resist sleep?

Many neurodivergent nervous systems run on engagement. When the environment provides something interesting, the brain is activated and functioning well. When the input drops, the brain does not simply settle into a calm resting state. It seeks stimulation in other ways, through thoughts, planning, replaying, creating, or the kind of hyperfocus that inconveniently arrives at 11pm when everything else is supposed to be winding down. The transition to sleep requires a kind of neutral idle that many neurodivergent brains do not have reliable access to. There is engaged and there is crashed, with very little comfortable territory in between.
This is compounded by the fact that many neurodivergent people also process sensory information intensely. At night, when external stimulation drops away, internal sensory experience can become more prominent. The texture of sheets, the temperature of the room, the sound of a partner breathing, physical awareness that was screened out during the day becomes impossible to ignore when everything else has gone quiet. The nervous system that was beginning to settle is re-activated by input that most people would never notice.
The crash is not the same as rest
A lot of neurodivergent people describe falling asleep less as a gradual transition and more as a crash. The system runs until it simply stops, often abruptly, after hours of not being able to sleep followed by a sudden collapse into unconsciousness. This is not the same as moving through sleep stages in an organized way. The brain that crashes from exhaustion tends to miss some of the deeper restorative stages that it would move through if the transition had been gradual and natural. The result is sleep that happened but did not fully restore, and the person wakes up already running a deficit.
What the brain map tends to show

When neurodivergent people come in for a brain map, the patterns we see vary quite a bit, which is part of the point. Some show significant fast brainwave activity with very little slow, a brain that does not know how to come down. Some show the U-shaped pattern, too much fast and too much slow with not enough stable middle range, which is like having a foot on the gas and a foot on the brake at the same time. Some show patterns associated with a specific sleep disruption that may be contributing to daytime attention and regulation challenges in ways that look like ADHD but may involve a sleep pattern underneath.
Knowing which pattern is present changes the approach. A general sleep protocol applied to every neurodivergent person regardless of their specific brain data is likely to produce inconsistent results because the same label can have meaningfully different neurophysiology underneath.
