If you have never done neurofeedback therapy before, it is completely reasonable to have no idea what you are walking into. The word itself does not tell you much, and most of the descriptions online are either too clinical to picture or too vague to be useful. So here is what it is like at LuxNeuro, from the moment you walk in.
The environment
The first thing people tend to notice is that LuxNeuro does not feel like a clinic. It is warm, it is calm, and the people in it are genuinely glad you are there. That is not an accident. We built the space to feel safe because for a lot of the people who come through our door, feeling safe is not something they experience in most clinical settings. Whether you are coming in for yourself or bringing your kid, the energy in the room matters and we pay attention to it.
In the neurofeedback room there is a comfortable reclining gaming chair, a TV screen, and the neurofeedback equipment. The chair reclines if you want it to, stays upright if you prefer. The lighting is comfortable. The room is quiet. It is designed to be a place where your nervous system can settle rather than having to work harder to manage the environment on top of everything else.
The first sessions

Your first neurofeedback sessions with our team are not plug-and-play. We take time to explain what the training is, what it does, what the protocols are targeting based on your brain map, and what you may or may not notice between sessions. This matters because when people understand what is happening and why, they tend to engage differently with the process and stick with it through the stages where change is subtle rather than dramatic. We have found that the people who understand their own training tend to get better results, and that is worth the time it takes to explain it well.
In those early sessions you will hear about your brain in language that makes sense to you, not in z-scores and frequency bands but in terms of how what we found in the brain map connects to what you have been experiencing in your life. For a lot of people, this is the first time their experience has been explained in a way that clicks. Not just labeled as anxiety or ADHD or depression but connected to something physiological that they can feel and that makes the rest of the picture make sense.
What the session itself feels like

Once the sensors are placed on your scalp, which takes a few minutes and feels like light pressure at specific points on your head, you sit back in the chair and watch something on the screen. Most people watch a show on Netflix, something pleasant that they enjoy but do not need to pay intense attention to. Some people prefer meditation music, documentaries, or solfeggio frequencies. We figure out what works for you together.
You do not have to do anything during the session. You do not have to concentrate or try to make something happen. The sensors are reading the brain’s electrical activity and the system provides feedback through subtle changes in the audio and visual experience. The brain responds to that feedback on its own, adjusting its patterns over time through the same kind of learning that underlies most behavioral change. Most people describe the experience as surprisingly easy and relaxing. Some people nearly fall asleep, which is fine. The brain is still learning even when the conscious mind is not tracking it.
Sessions run about 30 to 35 minutes of active training time, with the full appointment taking about 45 to 50 minutes including setup and a brief check-in at the beginning and end.
What people notice
After a first session, the most common thing people describe is a sense of calm or groundedness that feels different from their usual state. Some people say their head feels quieter. Some feel tired in a good way, like their brain did something effortful and is settling. Occasionally someone will feel a bit more activated or emotional, which is the brain responding to the training and is something we monitor and adjust for. One of my favorite things a young client said after their first session was that they felt comfortable in their own skin. That is a pretty good description of what regulation feels like when you have not had reliable access to it before.
Over time, as sessions accumulate, people tend to describe changes that go well beyond the session itself. Sleep quality shifts. The fog lifts. Emotional reactivity that was running hot starts to settle. Some people describe seeing the color come back into their skin, looking more alert and present and alive behind their eyes. The clear windshield effect is something we hear about a lot, this sense that a layer of noise that was always there has gotten quieter and the world looks different because of it.
If you are curious about neurofeedback and want to know whether it makes sense for your situation, a discovery call is where we start. And if you are nervous about what the experience will be like, know that you will not be the first person to walk through the door feeling that way, and you will not be the last person to leave surprised by how comfortable it was.
