If you have ADHD and you cannot sleep, you probably already know the two are connected. What you may not know is why. Or, why the usual sleep advice tends to fall short.
The answer is not always that you have too much on your mind. Sometimes it is about what your brain is actually doing when you try to shut it down.
The Brain That Does Not Know How To Idle
For many people with ADHD, the brain runs predominantly on fast brainwave activity. It is externally focused, alert, and responsive. That can be a genuine asset during the day. At night, it becomes a problem.
When it is time to sleep, the brain needs to downshift. It needs to move through lighter stages into deeper, more restorative rest. That transition requires the brain to produce slower, calming rhythms. For a brain that has been running fast all day and has very little of those calming rhythms available, downshifting does not happen easily.
So you lie down. And the thoughts start. Not because you are anxious exactly, though that can be part of it. But because the brain does not have an off switch. It keeps processing, connecting, and generating. It is doing what it learned to do. It just cannot find its way to quiet.

The Insomnia Pattern That Looks Like ADHD
There is also something worth knowing that often gets missed. Sometimes what looks like ADHD is actually an insomnia pattern.
In brain mapping work, there is a specific pattern sometimes visible in the top center of the brain that may be associated with sleep disruption. When this pattern is present, the brain may be working hard to keep itself awake which during the day can look exactly like ADHD. Difficulty focusing, low energy, emotional dysregulation, cognitive fog.
Some people in this pattern find themselves using stimulants to function during the day and sleep aids to come down at night without realizing that the underlying issue may be a sleep pattern rather than a primary attention problem. When we can see this distinction in a brain map it changes the approach considerably. Addressing the sleep pattern may be the most direct path to the attention and regulation challenges the person came in for.
Why Telling Yourself To Calm Down Does Not Work
One of the most frustrating things about ADHD and sleep is that effort alone does not tend to solve it. You can tell yourself to relax. You can do all the right things, no screens, a consistent schedule, a dark room. And the brain may still not cooperate.
That is not a willpower problem. If the brain does not have enough of the inhibitory rhythms that create a natural brake, telling it to calm down is a bit like telling someone to walk when they do not have access to that function. The instruction is not the issue. The capacity is.
This is why working directly with the brain patterns that are driving the sleeplessness tends to reach something that behavioral strategies alone do not always fully address.
What Neurofeedback May Do
Neurofeedback gives the brain real-time feedback about its own activity and may help it learn to produce different patterns over time. For someone whose brain is running too fast at bedtime, this may mean helping it build more access to the calming rhythms that allow it to downshift. For someone whose primary challenge is a sleep disruption pattern rather than classic ADHD, the approach may look quite different.
This is why we start with a brain map before doing anything else. ADHD and sleep problems can look the same from the outside, but have very different things driving them underneath. Knowing which one you are working with changes what may actually help.
